Piraguas y Piropos was founded by Marcos and Jose in 2021 after years of performing as a duet in Chicago. This ensemble was born from a desire to fill a void in the local music scene, dedicated to preserving and performing Jíbaro music—Puerto Rican Folkloric Traditional Music. Rooted in the Puerto Rican tradition and enriched by jazz influences, Marcos and Jose bring a unique blend of classical and Caribbean rhythms, maintaining the traditional essence while introducing fresh, improvisational elements to each performance.
Joining the ensemble is Rosalba Valdez, a Chicago-based Mexican singer/songwriter, whose artistry and activism are intertwined. Raised in an environment advocating for immigrant rights, Rosalba began performing at a young age, using her voice to champion social causes. Her music, including her powerful single “LUCHA DE FAMILIAS” and her debut EP Yo Soy Mexicana, resonates with themes of unity and resilience within the immigrant community. Together, Piraguas y Piropos and Rosalba Valdez merge Puerto Rican and Mexican influences, creating a vibrant, culturally rich musical experience that pays homage to their roots and connects with audiences across Chicago and beyond.
